Camberwell v Fitzroy 5th August 2007
By Neil Shallue
1st quarter
The Roy’s last game for the season commenced on a high. Kicking
with the breeze and using a tactical back line proved a winning combination.
The field was electric and well supported by the bench and the side
lines.
Camberwell scored the first point for the day five minutes into the
game, but due to the determination of the Roys the damage was minimised.
Five minutes later the Roys levelled the score with Ben kicking a
point.
As both sides tried to establish a lead, the ball moved equally from
half to half. The ball didn't seem to leave the ground and remained
in the pack. A goal was elusive for both sides in this quarter, and
the following points were tapped through to gain the advantage from
the kick out. The board reflected three points for each side, and
the Roys were rising to the challenge.
2nd quarter
The wind had dropped this quarter to favour the Roys, but honestly
the Roys were on a roll. Within the first two minutes Sam kicked a
goal for the Roys, and coaches box was on fire.
The Roys maintained pressure on the Sharks for the quarter ensuring
that only two points were scored by theSharks. The ball appeared to
spend time in both halves, but the determination of the Roys saw the
board reading four points up for the Roys at half time.
3rd quarter
Camberwell definitely wanted the ball in this quarter, and one minute
into the game the first goal for Camberwell was scored. This had the
ability to change the game, but Sam once again, matched the Sharks
by kicking a goal for the Roys three minutes later, maintaining the
Ro’s upper hand.
The Sharks were desperate, and made the most of the play using the
ball wisely. Handballs, and marking by the Sharks proved to be more
disciplined than in previous quarters. The Sharks were able to score
three points and finally a goal to end the quarter. The Roys had lost
the top spot and the board signalled five points down for the Roys.
4th quarter
To say the Roys would take his lying down is an understatement. Encouraging
words from Gary, Michael, and Brendan, elevated the Roys is to dig
deep, and they did. Once the ball had bounced the Roys scored two
successive points back to back. Sam kicking the first and then Jeremy.
At this stage the Roys narrowed the gap to be three points down, and
still within reach of a win.
The Sharks took charge and were able to tip the scales even more.
A point, then two goals, and finally another point five minutes from
the siren, made it hard ask for the Roys. The Roys played well, but
the Sharks opened up the field and kept the ball in the air and on
the run. At the end of the day the Roys couldn't counter the Sharks
and ended two goals down from the day.
The Roys took the result with great sportsmanship, congratulating
the Sharks and adding words of encouragement for the finals. Scott
was awarded a medal by the Sharks in recognition of his efforts in
the game.
In the rooms Gary expressed his pleasure at being a coach for the
Roys this past season. He acknowledged that the team had grown over
the season building skills in kicking, marking, and backing up. Every
player had given their best and even more when called upon. Gary was
very proud of this and hopes the team stays together next year and
that he has the opportunity to be the coach once again.
Three cheers for Gary!!!
